AI for business: June 2024
June 2024 showed AI moving from separate applications into the everyday tools employees already use.
What happened
Apple announced Apple Intelligence (June 10). At its developer conference, Apple presented AI features built into its operating systems, including writing assistance, summaries of messages and notifications, and a more capable Siri, with much of the processing performed on the device. For businesses whose staff use Apple equipment, AI would arrive through ordinary software updates rather than new purchases.
Anthropic released Claude 3.5 Sonnet (June 20). Anthropic reported that the new mid-priced model outperformed its previous top model on many tasks while costing less to use. The release continued the pattern of the year: each new generation delivered more capability per dollar.
What it meant for business owners
- AI use became harder to see. When AI is built into email, messaging and phones, staff use it without choosing a separate tool. Usage policies needed to cover built-in features as well as standalone services.
- Capability per dollar kept improving. Projects that depended on a top-tier model could often be run on a mid-priced model a few months later.
- The advantage shifted to data and process. As capable models became widely available, the difference between businesses came to depend on how well they organized their own information and processes.
One action for owners
Update your AI usage policy to cover features built into the software and devices your staff already use, and state which business information may be processed by them. If you do not yet have a policy, our article on bringing AI onboard explains what it should contain.
